The Rehabilitation Hospital
About The Rehabilitation Hospital In Israel
Rehabilitation means restoring health and function, not only to the body but also to the mind. The Rehabilitation Hospital is one of the six hospitals at Sheba Medical Center and exists to help all of our patients regain control over their lives. As the national rehabilitation hospital of Israel, our facility provides world-class medicine with a personal touch by offering rehabilitation services for a variety of conditions and needs.
The Rehabilitation Center advances our goal of tailor-made medicine by providing very specialized care for each patient. This includes orthopedic, psychiatric, neurologic, geriatric, respiratory, and post-trauma rehabilitation. We are the foremost rehabilitation center in the nation and represent the cutting edge of rehabilitative medicine worldwide. In fact, the Rehabilitation Hospital at Sheba Medical Center provides treatment to both IDF service members as well as victims of terrorism.

Departments
The Rehabilitation Hospital contains a number of extremely specialized departments, many of which are among the few of their kind in the world. Staffed with experienced and trained experts, these departments engage in ongoing research while providing top level care to our patients.
Department of Orthopedic Rehabilitation
Directed by Prof. Israel Dudkiewicz, the Department of Orthopedic Rehabilitation has 36 patient beds and conducts 550 same day surgeries each year. It is a holistic entity, providing comprehensive medical care from orthopedists, prosthetists, psychologists, occupational and physical therapists, and social workers. Our modern facility cares for patients with a variety of issues – from diabetic foot problems to amputations. It also provides state of the art equipment, like hydrotherapy facilities.
A large number of outpatient and inpatient surgeries and procedures can be performed at the center. In addition, the department has a proud history of giving excellent care to military veterans.
Department of Neurological Rehabilitation
This department is responsible for the treatment of patients with nervous system damage from injury or chronic disease, such as multiple sclerosis, and is directed by Dr. Moshe Bondi. He received his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in Israel. He then specialized in rehabilitation and physical medicine in the Department of Neurological Rehabilitation at Sheba Medical Center, under the supervision of Prof. Gabriel Zeilig. The department is very large, staffed with numerous experts and containing 12 outpatient clinics. It provides advanced, integrative services, including cooperation among neurologists, physical and occupational therapists, urologists, pulmonologists, social workers, and psychologist. There is also a large laboratory and imaging center.
The Department of Neurological Rehabilitation sees 400 inpatients a year and provides 24 hour care for our patients. Each patient receives a case manager to oversee coordination of care and keep our patients and their families constantly informed about their status.
Day Rehabilitation Unit
Under the direction of Dr. Harold Weingarden, the Day Rehabilitation Unit is designed to provide integrative, total care to patients who do not require overnight or inpatient hospitalization. Originally formed from the Department of Neurological Rehabilitation, the Day Rehabilitation Unit treats patients suffering from a variety of conditions including burns, chronic severe pain, nerve injuries, and joint problems.
The unit cares for 3,500 patients every year. Holistic care includes efforts from medical, nursing, social work, psychology, and therapy staff.
Psychiatric Division
The Psychiatric Division of the Rehabilitation Hospital, headed by Prof. Mark Weiser, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for each patient and getting them back to enjoying life. A healthy, happy future is always our goal. Within the hospital, numerous subdivisions exist to address very specific needs and issues. The Psychiatric Division is very large and well equipped and provides support for both patients and their family members. Including outpatients, over 100,000 patients are seen each year in the Psychiatric Division.
Geriatric Division
The Geriatric Division is headed by Prof. Dan Justo and sees over 4,200 patients each year. With 216 total beds, this department provides for the medical and psychological needs of elderly patients. A comprehensive approach is taken to the treatment of disease with specialization in several important areas, including Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, speech difficulties, and memory issues.
Department of Respiratory Care and Rehabilitation
The respiratory system is one of the most critical of the body’s organ systems. Sheba Medical Center recognizes that an integrative approach to respiratory support, including support for other body systems, leads to the best patient outcomes. In adherence to this philosophy, the Department of Respiratory Care and Rehabilitation, directed by Dr. Evgeni Gaidukov, is staffed with specialists in a number of different disciplines, including nursing, respiratory therapy, physical and occupation therapy, critical care, and pulmonology.
In addition to constant ongoing research, this department provides treatment for a variety of respiratory afflictions to about 200 inpatients every year. These disorders include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sleep apnea, and adult respiratory distress syndrome. Advanced life-saving techniques, such as computerized ventilation, are available.
Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy
As part of our commitment to total patient care, Sheba Medical Center is proud to provide advanced physiotherapy and hydrotherapy services to our patients. Physiotherapy is conducted under the guidance of a physiatrist, a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal issues affecting body movement. A skilled team of physical therapists and occupational therapists delivers therapy using a range of treatment modalities, including stretching, icing, exercise, and electrical stimulation.
Hydrotherapy is one treatment option in the realm of physiotherapy. It consists of exercises and maneuvers in a pool or large tub of water. The water lessens the impact on joints and painful areas while also building strength through resistance.
Virtual Reality (VR) Training Facility
Our VR Training Facility perfectly illustrates how Sheba Medical Center is on the cutting edge of technology for the improvement of medicine and our patients’ lives. This unique center is the only one of its kind in the world and provides massive benefits to patients. This is achieved by allowing patients to enter virtual environments, such as a walk through a park or balancing on a ship. These activities, under the guidance of Sheba’s expert medical staff, allow the patient to build strength, coordination, balance, and endurance in a safe, secure environment.
Speech Therapy
Hearing and speech are vital to everyday communication. That is why Sheba Medical Center has an outstanding Speech Therapy Department directed by Dr. Minka Hildesheimer and committed to assisting patients with a host of speech and language issues. Aphasia, the inability to speak coherently, is treated by experienced, specialized therapists in conjunction with surgeons, nurses, and ear, nose, and throat physicians. Whether the speech and language problems are due to injury, stroke, or psychiatric issues, the Speech Therapy Department stands ready to help all of our patients with the latest in advanced, integrative medicine.
