Pediatric Neurology Institute at Sheba Medical Center
Sheba’s Pediatric Neurology Institute is directed by Prof. Bruria Gidoni-Ben-Zeev and receives 2,200 outpatient visits annually. The institute treats a variety of neurologic problems such as headaches, autism, neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy, developmental disorders, and neurometabolic problems.
Like all of Sheba Medical Center, the institute takes a holistic approach to the treatment of childhood neurologic issues, integrating the expertise of other specialties and clinics, such as genetics, pediatrics, and adult neurology.
Furthermore, Sheba is proud to have the most advanced diagnostic tools available for our pediatric neurology patients. Among these are:
- Brain SPECT and PET imaging
- Electroencephalography (EEG)
- Genetic testing
- Metabolic testing
- MRI and functional MRI
Additionally, there are several subspecialty clinics within the Pediatric Neurology Institute. These include:
- The Pediatric Epilepsy Service
This service is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of seizure disorders in children. Many treatments are available, including drug monitoring, ketogenic diet treatment, new drug therapies, and anti-epileptic surgery in concert with the Pediatric Neurosurgery Department.
- The Rett Syndrome Center
Rett Syndrome is caused by a rare genetic mutation affecting the brain’s gray matter. The Rett Syndrome Center serves to educate parents, patients, and the general public about this syndrome. It also provides services, diagnosis, and treatment to pediatric patients with Rett Syndrome, combining knowledge and specialists from neurology, pediatrics, gastroenterology, endocrinology and orthopedics.
- Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) Clinic
Sheba’s PDD clinic provides services to children with autism spectrum disorders, speech, language, and social difficulties, and other developmental delays. These services include exacting diagnosis of the complex problems that can be easily confused with other genetic disorders. Comprehensive treatment options are provided to patients and their parents, along with education and support.
