Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit
The Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit at Sheba Medical Center offers comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for children and teenagers with diseases of the digestive system or liver. Inpatient and outpatient services are provided. The types of gastrointestinal conditions and symptoms that present in children can be dramatically different from those that occur in adults, and experienced specialists comprise the team of this specialized unit. Multidisciplinary experts, including surgeons, radiologists, and nutritionists collaborate with pediatric gastroenterologists to custom-design treatment programs for every patient. Our department is also actively involved in many clinical research trials in Israel and around the world.

The Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit is located within the modern outpatient wing of the Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital, a comprehensive facility at Sheba Medical Center dedicated entirely to children and their families. - Gastroscopy – Endoscopy of the Upper Digestive Tract
- Capsule endoscopy
- Colonoscopy and Sigmoidoscopy – Endoscopy of the lower part of the large bowel or the entire colon
- Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
- Hydrogen Breath Tests – are used for evaluation of Carbohydrates Malabsorption as well as small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth
- Manometry of the Rectum and the Esophagus
- Electrogastrography – a diagnostic procedure aimed to detect Gastroduodenal Motility disorders

Batya Weiss, MD
Director of the Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit
Dr. Weiss received her medical degree from the Hebrew University – Hadassah Medical School and completed her specialization in Pediatrics at the Sheba Medical Center. Dr. Weiss was a clinical fellow in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, USA.
