Hip Replacement

HIP REPLACEMENT IN ISRAEL

The hip is made up of the head of the femur, or thigh bone, and part of the pelvis called the acetabulum. As people age, they become more likely to suffer a hip fracture either from a fall or spontaneously. Hip fractures, in combination with arthritis, are a frequent cause for hip replacements. Hip replacement in Israel is popular. Sheba Medical Center uses the latest techniques and advanced prostheses in our hip replacement surgeries, providing our patients with the best care available.

Primary Hip Replacement

Hip replacement surgery is usually not the first option presented to patients. Conservative measures, such as anti-inflammatory drugs and physical therapy, are typically trialed first. However, when conservative therapies fail, a hip replacement may be necessary. Over 170 primary hip replacement surgeries are performed at Sheba Medical Center every year, and 95 percent of those use a cementless prosthesis.

The typical hospital stay lasts a single week with about three months needed for a full recovery. The patient is usually able to walk immediately after surgery with the use of an assistive device, such as a cane or walker.

Revision Hip Replacement

Revision hip replacements are performed when a patient’s original hip replacement fails for some reason. Typical causes of failure include hardware loosening, subsequent injury, or medical noncompliance. About 50 of these revision surgeries are performed every year at Sheba Medical Center.

The nature and length of the postoperative recovery varies greatly from patient to patient, depending on the medical history. Whenever possible, cementless prostheses are used at Sheba Medical Center in order to prevent future loosening and failure. Trusted names in medical devices and prosthetics, such as Johnson & Johnson, are exclusively used for all our orthopedic hardware.
