The Center for Liver Diseases

Although the liver is sometimes considered a digestive organ, it has several important roles in the body. Along with the kidneys, it aids in detoxification. It also regulates the contents of the blood, including fat and protein.

Unfortunately, the liver is subject to several diseases, including cirrhosis and hepatitis. The Center for Liver Diseases at Sheba Medical Center provides advanced, integrative treatment for liver patients and support for their families. We believe in offering world-class medicine with a personal touch and achieve this by providing each patient with an expert, caring, and an interdisciplinary team consisting of hepatologists, gastroenterologists, hepatobiliary surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, and support staff. The unit treats approximately 6,500 patients every year.

Liver conditions treated at our facility include:

  • Fatty liver disease.
  • Viral hepatitis, both acute and chronic, of all types.
  • Benign liver tumors.
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma.
  • Acute liver failure.
  • Portal hypertension.
  • Cirrhosis of the liver.
  • Liver transplant evaluation and follow up care.

Knee Replacement page

Knee Replacement Treatment

Sheba Medical Center’s Joint Replacement Service is responsible for dozens of joint replacement procedures each year. One of the most commonly replaced joints is the knee. Knees are subject to much wear and tear from simple daily walking. If the patient is an athlete or has arthritis, damage may accumulate even more quickly.

Our orthopedic surgeons work in conjunction with physicians from other specialties, nursing, and support staff to provide the latest and best surgical options for patients requiring knee arthroplasties. We also use only proven and trusted prosthetics in these procedures.

Kidney (Renal) Cancer

Kidney Cancer Treatment

The kidneys are the body’s filtration system, responsible for cleansing the blood and eliminating waste products via urine. Normally people have two kidneys, although it is possible to survive with a single kidney. Modern medicine has advanced imaging techniques to measure kidney structure and function, as well as laboratory tests that ascertain the level of kidney function to a precise level.

During the 1980’s, a diagnosis of kidney cancer was very dire. Renal tumor could only be detected in their final stages, offering little hope for the patient. Happily, that is no longer the case today. Tumors of the kidneys can be detected early in their development and treatment can begin much sooner. Sheba Medical Center is at the forefront of both kidney cancer treatment and detection.

Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer. About 90% of kidney cancer diagnoses are renal cell carcinoma. This cancer type has many subtypes, but clear cell renal cell carcinoma is the most frequently seen. Exact diagnosis is made by pathological examination, and an accurate diagnosis is crucial to proper treatment.
