What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer is defined as the presence of abnormal cells in the breast tissue. The tissue affected can be ductal tissue, comprising the milk ducts, or glandular tissue, the tissue that actually produces milk. These cancer cells multiply and spread, invading other body areas usually via lymph nodes.
What Are The Risk Factors For Breast Cancer?
While men are also subject to breast cancer, the disease is much more prevalent among women. In addition to being female, other risk factors for breast cancer include:
AGE
Breast cancer is by no means limited to the elderly, but women over the age of 55 have a higher risk of breast cancer than younger women.
PERSONAL HISTORY
Women who have had breast cancer before are more prone to having the disease again compared to women with no personal history of breast cancer.
FAMILY HISTORY
Patients who have relatives with breast cancer may have an increased risk of encountering the disease themselves as there are several genetic factors at play.
BREAST DENSITY
Women with dense or fibrocystic breast tissue are more susceptible to breast cancer.
