Advanced cataract surgeries provided by Sheba Doctors for Residents of Papua New Guinea

Sheba Doctors Restore Sight to Residents of Papua New Guinea
A team comprised of several Israeli ophthalmologists and nurses recently set sail for the South Pacific paradise island of Papua New Guinea, where they will perform advanced cataract surgeries. The head of the team is Dr. Eva Platner, an ophthalmologist, and all of the medical specialists represent The Israel Center for Disaster Medicine and Humanitarian Response at Sheba Medical Center.

Altogether, the two ophthalmologists and three nurses traveled to Papua New Guinea to perform cataract removal procedures on a ship owned by an Australian humanitarian NGO. According to Professor Elhanan Bar-On, Director of the Center for Disaster Medicine and Humanitarian Response, “They will spend two weeks sailing around Papua New Guinea, docking near villages and towns where patients will come aboard and receive treatment.”

In addition to the eye care team, Dr. Ori Platner (Dr. Eva Platner’s husband) also joined to offer his services as an experienced dentist, providing onboard dental care and treatments.

This project was established in collaboration with Natan, a humanitarian NGO. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested the medical venture and provided partial funding.
