Sheba Medical Center

What Treatments Does Sheba Offer for Primary Liver Cancer?

Sheba is pleased to offer the newest effective therapies to treat hepatocellular carcinoma. Doctors from various medical departments will evaluate your condition thoroughly and collaborate to customize an integrative treatment to meet your unique needs. Treatment options at Sheba include:

Surgery:

a partial, selective resection is the main treatment for primary liver cancer.

Ablation

this breakthrough treatment is performed by inserting a needle into the center of the tumor, which heats and destroys cancer cells. The process is local and direct, so damage to nearby tissue is minimized.

Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE):

chemotherapy drugs are administered via a catheter that is inserted into the artery of the liver, and then the artery is blocked – leading to necrosis of the cancer. Another version of TACE involves injecting beads that are filled with chemotherapy drugs into the liver artery.

Radioembolization – Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT):

small glass pellets coated with a radioactive substance are injected into the hepatic artery, enabling localized irradiation and necrosis of the tumor, while avoiding damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Biological treatments:

growth inhibitors, administered as a one-time oral pill, affect the tumor’s ability to develop. This treatment is generally used for patients with advanced metastatic primary liver cancer.
