Does multiple myeloma cause iron deficiency?

Iron-deficiency anemia is not directly caused by multiple myeloma. However, chronic disease or inflammation, common in myeloma, can lead to anemia of chronic disease, which can mimic some features of iron-deficiency anemia. Furthermore, some treatments or bone marrow involvement can reduce the production of red blood cells, leading to anemia. It’s essential to differentiate the cause of anemia in myeloma patients for appropriate management.
