Does MDS turn into multiple myeloma?
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and multiple myeloma are distinct hematological disorders. MDS is a group of diseases that affect the bone marrow’s ability to produce mature blood cells, while multiple myeloma involves the proliferation of malignant plasma cells. While both disorders are malignancies of the bone marrow, MDS doesn’t typically transform into multiple myeloma. That said, it’s not unheard of for a patient to develop both conditions, but they’d usually be considered separate entities rather than a transformation from one to the other.
