Can a bone scan detect multiple myeloma?

A bone scan uses radioactive tracers to visualize bones and detect areas of abnormal metabolism, which could be indicative of various conditions, including cancer or infections. While a bone scan might show abnormalities in patients with multiple myeloma, it isn’t specific to the disease. For a definitive diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a combination of clinical findings, blood tests and bone marrow biopsy are typically required. Nevertheless, a bone scan can still be valuable in monitoring the disease’s progression and assessing bone involvement.
