Can a bone density test detect multiple myeloma?

A bone density test, also known as a DEXA scan, primarily measures bone mineral density to diagnose osteoporosis. While the test might indicate reduced bone density in individuals with multiple myeloma due to the disease’s propensity to cause bone lesions, it isn’t a definitive diagnostic tool for myeloma. Patients with suspicious findings on a bone density test would typically complete additional evaluations and tests to determine the cause of bone loss, and to diagnose conditions like multiple myeloma.
