Sheba Uses Advanced Laser Surgery for Better Urinary Tumor Removal

Laser Surgery for Better Urinary Tumor Removal
An advanced type of laser surgery for the removal of tumors in the urinary system is currently in use at Sheba Medical Center. This procedure allows tumors to be excised while sparing urinary organs, such as the kidneys and ureters. This allows patients to have a faster recovery and avoid complications like dialysis.

The specialists at Sheba have performed the removal of urinary tract tumors using an innovative laser approach which allows kidney preservation, eliminates the need for external incisions, and contributes to a rapid rehabilitation – a first in Israel. Upper urinary tract tumors are traditionally treated through the removal of organs of the urinary system, such as the kidneys and ureters.

This treatment exposes patients to the risks associated with kidney loss. In most cases, these tumors have low malignancy. Therefore, this type of radical treatment is often unnecessary. In recent years, it became clear that the preservation of kidney tissue is of the utmost importance since patients who undergo kidney resection show higher rates of hospital readmission, shorter life expectancies, and tend to develop renal failure necessitating dialysis.

Sheba’s Urology Department has recently utilized powerful, cutting-edge laser technology to treat these tumors effectively. This innovative system is used in only a limited number of medical centers around the globe. This laser’s uniqueness lies in its ability to perform extensive excision of large tumors while maintaining optimal visibility and exceptional control of bleeding. The device combines lasers that complement each other at two different wavelengths.

This technology also reduces the need for repeat operations. This breakthrough allows for efficient and effective cancer treatment while preserving kidney tissue and avoiding radical surgery.
