Treatments for Myelofibrosis

There is no singular treatment that is always effective for treating MF. Each individual has a unique set of circumstances and symptoms that need different therapies. In addition, some MF patients will remain asymptomatic for years. However, everyone who has been diagnosed with myelofibrosis must be monitored to watch for changes. Your medical team at Sheba will consist of world-class multidisciplinary doctors who collaborate to customize your treatment program for myelofibrosis.

Treatment options at Sheba for MF include:

Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy uses a new type of drugs to recognize and attack specific cancerous cells without harming normal cells. Jakafi (ruxolitinib) is indicated as a treatment for MF patients who have an intermediate or high-risk form of the disease. This type of targeted therapy is taken orally, and it partially inhibits the action of the JAK2 gene mutation and its related protein JAK1.

Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant

Presently, an allogeneic stem cell transplant (using stem cells from a genetically suitable donor) is the only curative treatment for myelofibrosis. During this procedure, diseased bone marrow cells are replaced by specialized stem cells that grow and restore the body’s normal blood cells. Before the transplant, you will need high doses of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy to kill the cells in your bone marrow.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy drugs (hydroxyurea or cladribine) can treat specific symptoms of MF, such as to shrink an enlarged spleen and alleviate pain.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation may be used to help relieve some of the signs and symptoms of MF, such as to shrink an enlarged spleen – especially when surgery is not considered a good option for you.
