Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Treatment

Our Hematology Clinic at Sheba Medical Center features a multidisciplinary team of experienced specialists. Together, we work to ensure that each patient benefits from frontline, personalized Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Treatment in Israel. Our world-class doctors, including medical oncologists, hematologists, and radiation oncologists will apply their top-tier skills and extensive clinical and laboratory experience to design your fully integrated treatments and care.

CLL therapies are customized depending on:

  • Stage of the disease
  • Presence of any symptoms or signs
  • Response to initial treatment
  • Blood count results
  • Prognostic markers of the disease
  • Whether the CLL has recurred

Sheba offers the following treatments for CLL:

Chemotherapy

Your team will carefully consider the most effective combination of chemotherapy drugs to target your specific disease. The efficacy of chemotherapy can be increased by delivering more than one type of drug.

Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapies involve the administration of drugs that can pinpoint and attack specific cancer cells. These drugs are manufactured by using antibodies that are produced from a certain type of immune system cell. The antibodies are capable of identifying molecules on cancer cells or locating normal substances in the body that assist cancer cells to grow. Currently, several oral targeted agents (such as ibrutinib, idelalisib, and venetoclax) are used to treat CLL with targeted therapy.

Bone Marrow Transplant

A bone marrow transplant replaces bone marrow damaged by leukemia with highly specialized stem cells that multiply and develop into healthy bone marrow. Prior to performing this procedure, a bone marrow biopsy is generally performed. Also called a stem cell transplant, this procedure can be done in two different ways – depending on the source of the replacement blood stem cells. Allogeneic bone marrow transplants use donated stem cells, and autologous transplants use the patient’s own stem cells.

Typically, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy is first administered to destroy all of the CLL cancer cells, and then a bone marrow transplant is performed to replace blood stem cells so they can create new and healthy bone marrow in your body.
