Tiberiu Shulimzon

Dr. Tiberiu Shulimzon, Director of the Interventional Pulmonology Unit, has completed his medical studies in Romania and was trained at Sheba Medical Center in Internal Medicine and Pulmonology. He later passed qualifications in Rigid Bronchoscopy and Laser procedures at the St.Marguerite Hospital in Marseille, France and at the University Hospital in Basel. He performs flexible bronchoscopies both diagnostic (BAL, biopsies etc) and therapeutic. He is also competent with cryotherapy, brachytherapy, laser (YAG, Argon, CO2), and autofluorescence bronchoscopy.

Dr. Shulimzon is involved in the Israeli programme of early lung cancer diagnostic (ELCAP) that runs at Sheba since 2002.This involves screening by HRCT scans low radiation, sputum cytology analysis and autofluorescence bronchoscopy of population at risk.

Interventional Pulmonology (IP) is a chapter of medicine dealing with all the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures requiring live access to the lung tissues. The procedures performed include evaluation of the respiratory anatomy through endoscopic technologies: flexible and rigid bronchoscopies, using ultrasound imaging (for lung external membrane called pleura) or both (EBUS endobronchial ultrasound). These technologies allow sampling of the lung tissues and laboratory examination for disease diagnosis (infectious disease, cancer, genetic). Therapeutic interventions include airway opening by washing, Laser and CRYO therapies, brachytherapy, prosthesis (stents) placement, balloon dilatation, alveolar washing and pleural disease treatment by permanent drainage (pleurX). Most of the procedures are performed on conscious sedation at an ambulatory service. Collaboration with thoracic and ENT surgery is routine.
