Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Department

The Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Department at Sheba Medical Center is a comprehensive center designed to treat the different aspects of obesity – medical, dietary, and psychological. The risks of morbid obesity are immense, leading to many serious health conditions and reducing life expectancy by an average of 10 years. We perform all types of bariatric surgery as part of an effective treatment for obesity, and our multidisciplinary team provides personalized, supportive care before, during, and after the surgery.

Conditions We Treat at the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Department

Bariatric surgery is a treatment for morbid obesity, a condition that can lead to the development of many serious diseases and health problems, such as diabetes (type 2), hypertension, respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, and skeletal joint problems. By facilitating significant weight loss, bariatric surgery can thereby help to treat many of the associated illnesses.

To improve your success with weight loss after bariatric surgery, we also provide nutritional counseling to teach proper eating habits, a psychological service to encourage behavioral pattern changes in regards to food, and an endocrine service to treat diabetes and other endocrinological issues.

Types of Bariatric Surgery that We Offer

There are several types of bariatric surgery, and we offer all of them at Sheba. Our experienced physicians will meet with you to determine the most appropriate option.

Gastric Bypass:

This laparoscopic surgery creates a small gastric pouch that connects directly to the small intestine

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB):

A silicone ring with an internal balloon is placed around the upper stomach, thereby restricting food intake

Sleeve Gastrectomy (gastric sleeve):

this laparoscopic surgery reshapes the stomach into a narrow tube, reducing the volume and triggering hormonal effects that can suppress appetite

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG; accordion):

This is a minimally invasive procedure that uses endoscopic suturing to reduce stomach size; at Sheba, ESG is performed at the Institute of Gastroenterology
