In 2018, Israel climbed up one level to 6th place on the Bloomberg Health Care Efficiency Index. Every year, Bloomberg publishes a new index that assesses and ranks the health care efficiency of 56 countries. In order to qualify for the list, the countries must have a population of over five million, life expectancies of over 70, and a per capita GDP of over $5,000.  

Breakthrough research on contrast-enhanced mammography – an imaging technology that provides clearer breast cancer scans – is ongoing at The Meirav Breast Center at Sheba Medical Center. This all-inclusive interdisciplinary breast cancer facility is exploring the diagnostic performance of dye-enhanced mammography compared with traditional breast cancer screening.

Top CEOs and executives from North America and the EU participated to learn the best ways to apply revolutionary digital innovations. The summit was based on a shared recognition that the hospitals of the future must offer consistent, first-rate care while streamlining costs in the era of big-data.

Moussa, a six-month-old Palestinian baby from Ramallah, became the first recipient of a Jewish heart at Sheba Medical Center’s Pediatric & Congenital Heart Surgery Unit. He arrived at Sheba in critical condition, and according to the doctors he would not have survived without the transplant. The parents of a one-year-old Jewish child who died from a chronic illness donated the heart.

Sensus Healthcare recently sent its SRT-100 Vision system to Sheba Medical Center. This advanced device uses Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy (IGSRT) to enable the non-invasive treatment of non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC). The new SRT-100 Vision system unit is the third of its kind in Israel, with the other two installed previously at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv and Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva.

A team of doctors from Sheba Medical Center traveled recently to South Florida to lead an emergency management training program at Florida Atlantic University’s International Center for Emergency Management on its Boca Raton campus. The experts from Sheba provided first responders and medical teams with practical guidelines on how to save the most lives during mass casualty incidents, natural disasters, and CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) attacks. The week-long seminar was held in the destructive wake of Hurricane Michael.

Jacob Zauberman, MD, is a Senior Physician in the Department of Neurosurgery. This department at Sheba is the leader in its field in Israel, and Dr. Zauberman is a highly requested physician on staff. His superior and specialized skills are in constant demand by patients suffering from brain tumors, and he is always happy to help – particularly when the case is very complex.

This upcoming January, Dr. Itai Pessach will be inaugurated as the new Director of The Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital at Sheba Medical Center. For the past two years, Dr. Pessach served as Deputy Director of this pediatric hospital. He will be replacing Prof. Asher Barzilai, who was the Director of Safra Hospital for the past eight years and helped bring it to the forefront of pediatric medicine.

In 2016, I was diagnosed with prostrate adenocarcinoma (prostate cancer) with a Gleason score of 6. This was the worst news I had received in a long time. It was frustrating and depressing. Many thoughts ran through my mind without any clear source of hope. I shared the news with my family, who were all horrified just pondering the ultimate implications.
