Advanced Breast Cancer Treatment Options for International Patients
With over 4,000 new patients every year, the Meirav Breast Cancer Center treats more breast cancer patients than any other medical facility in Israel. Its holistic approach and advanced breast cancer treatment options, combined with cutting-edge research, have made it a hub for patients worldwide.
A Troubling Diagnosis
At 28 years, pregnant with her first child, Yana Darom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She immediately began treatment at Sheba Medical Center, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and a total mastectomy, followed by breast reconstruction surgery. Yana fought hard and won her battle, recently giving birth to her second child. She credits her family’s support, as well as the medical team at the Meirav Breast Cancer Center, with her ultimate recovery.
“My physicians and surgeons constantly communicated with me and each other. They always worked together to coordinate my treatment and progress. I truly knew that I was in good hands with the best doctors in Israel.”
Surviving Breast Cancer
In 2020, 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 685,000 deaths were recorded globally.
However, while 1 in 8 women worldwide will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives, fatality rates have decreased steadily over the past 30 years due to more precise early screening techniques, more knowledge regarding advanced stage breast cancer symptoms, and innovative treatments.
Sheba Medical Center’s Ongoing Cancer Research
In fact, when detected early, the success rate of breast cancer treatment is high. However, undetected or untreated breast cancer can become metastatic, spreading through the lining of the milk ducts into the surrounding breast tissue and eventually into the rest of the body, complicating treatment.
According to studies, certain cancers, like triple-negative breast cancer, are more likely to spread and return even after treatment. Triple-negative metastatic breast cancer treatment is even more complicated.
Between 10-20% of all breast cancer diagnoses are of triple-negative breast cancer. Unlike other breast cancers, triple-negative breast cancer does not respond to hormonal therapy or therapies that target HER2 protein receptors. While there are alternative treatment options, researchers are still seeking more effective therapies for the malignancy.
As part of our ongoing cancer research efforts, Sheba physicians initiated clinical trials last year to examine a new therapy to treat triple-negative cancer, as well as other invasive cancers.
Why Choose Sheba for Breast Cancer Treatment?
Each year, women from around the globe travel to Israel for advanced breast cancer treatment. They choose Sheba Medical Center for many reasons, including the following:
- The most advanced breast cancer treatment options:
With fewer constraints than the US on the road to adopting new breast cancer therapies, novel treatments have historically become more rapidly available to patients in Israel than in the US. The availability of new and innovative treatment for some women is crucial to successful breast cancer treatment.
- Quality of care:
As a JCI Gold Seal accredited institution with a team of highly trained and world-renowned medical professionals, Sheba Medical Center adheres to the highest standards and strict safety regulations. Sheba’s 360-degree care approach means that our medical professionals will assist you with arranging medical record reviews, travel arrangements, visas, accommodations, and language interpretation if needed.
Unfortunately, even with insurance, healthcare costs in the US can be very high. In Israel, the cost of medical treatment is anywhere from 30-80% less than in the US, while the quality of care remains among the most advanced in the world.
